Choosing a Laptop Case, Sleeve Or Bag

Whether you’ve got a top-of-the-line laptop tricked out for video editing or simply a bare-bones machine that handles word processing and the internet, chances are it gets scratched or damaged as you move around with it. A proper laptop case, sleeve or bag goes a long way toward preventing nicks and scratches. Whether you’re in the market for a sleek leather case or a colorful tablet protector, there’s something out there for everyone.

There’s a reason why many people choose to stick their laptop inside of a bag or sleeve instead of just carrying it by itself: It’s less bulky and gives the machine some extra protection. But picking a good laptop sleeve can be tricky, since advertised sizes tend to vary widely from one company to another. For instance, a sleeve that fits a 13” laptop may be too snug for a 15” model. That’s why it helps to measure your device and know what you’re working with.

To get the most accurate measurement, close your laptop and use a tape measure along its top and bottom (running parallel with the shortest sides). Then add an inch or two so that you can be sure your laptop will fit comfortably in the sleeve. Once you have the dimensions, look for a sleeve or bag that’s listed to fit your size. If not, you can often ask for a custom-made sleeve at CustomLogoCases or find a manufacturer that can make a specific sleeve to order.

Choosing a sleeve or bag with pockets is an excellent idea if you need to carry additional accessories along with your laptop, such as headphones, chargers, cords, pens and paper. Adding these can weigh down your laptop, so it’s important to consider how much you plan on bringing with you. For a bag that’s well-suited to this, we like the Curyana Tech Carryall. Its stylish, envelope-style design is roomy enough for a computer, plus it has pockets that keep accessories organized.

If you’d rather go with a more traditional case, a backpack is often the best option for frequent travelers. This type of case provides protection while still leaving plenty of space for other items, including a water bottle, snacks and an umbrella. It’s also great for anyone who has to walk in rain, as it’s waterproof.

Designers are a great example of this, as they usually bring their computers with them on client visits and to and from meetings. For this reason, they need a case or sleeve that can withstand the rough treatment of crowded bags and subway rides.

If you’re a freelancer, a laptop case that doubles as a portfolio is probably the smartest choice. It will help protect your device while giving it a professional, polished look that will impress clients. Plus, you’ll be able to slip it into a larger bag without any added bulk. We like this option from Herschel, which is crafted in durable nylon and can be monogrammed for an added personal touch.
